A minimum of 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

Contraband Recovery

At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

Smuggling Techniques

In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.

Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
