French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French police have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.

"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Now, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.

Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the boats.

The decision to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter approach this summer, which ceased when the former government official departed from government.

That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.

Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
