Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show nears, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
