In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
